As much as I may grumble about the colder months approach, I don’t think I could live somewhere where the seasons stayed relatively the same. There’s something special about waking up one morning in early October, stepping outside to the crisp air and a subtle shift in the daily noises of nature. It seems to happen overnight, like a knot coming undone; the nights come faster, fuzzy socks are again essential and multiple cups of tea can be easily justified as warming devices. Here, the tips of the trees are just beginning to change colour, as if the sun has lit them on fire and the birds sing a slower song. Each season feels like a chance to refresh, like pushing a big button that lets you shake off things you’ve been holding onto like dust. That sense of a new beginning is why I love the changing seasons.
Now, one part of fall and winter I’ll never be on board with, is dry skin and my lips are one of the most affected areas. But don’t worry, I’ve searched, tested and swatched what feels like every natural lip balm out there to find the winners so you don’t have to!
Dr.Lipp’s ‘Original Nipple Balm for Lips – This was the first balm on my hunt I discovered that really worked. So many chapsticks seemed to at first but, 20 minutes later, my lips would be dry and uncomfortable again. Dr. Lipp really sinks into the lips, leaving them softer than ever before. It is a very thick product (100% Lanolin) that can take some getting use to but its consistency is what makes it so effective.
Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask in Champagne – I wear this often on minimal or no makeup days as it’s moisturizing but also great for day wear. It lasts so long on the lips, has just the slightest bit of rose gold colour and smells like sweet vanilla. I received this as a gift from a friend and when I finish it off, I definitely want to try the original.
Osmia Organics Honey-Myrrh Lip Repair – As you can tell from the packaging, this stuff is well-loved. Everything I’ve tried from Osmia feels like an at home spa treatment; soothing for the skin and calming for the mind. Formulated with organic manuka honey, myrrh extract, and lanolin, it’s developed to repair cracked lips over a few days. It’s a rich, somewhat sticky balm with a strong herbal scent, perfect for using after a bath as I’m getting ready for bed. When I wake up the next morning, often I can still feel this on my lips.
CV Skinlabs Restorative Skin Balm – Let me just start by saying, this brand saved my skin last winter. I was suffering from severely dry skin on my face and hands and I’d tried many creams and at home remedies without much improvement. When I heard Beauty by Britanie speak so highly of them on Instagram, I went to The Detox Market the next day and bought the whole line. The first day I used the products, I saw results and less discomfort. Two weeks later, my eczema was 90% gone! The Restorative Skin Balm has many uses but in terms of a lip balm, this is my -30 degree, 5 feet of snow, bone chilling wind, winter morning go to. On those days, a thick layer of this keeps my lips protected on my walk from home, to the subway, to school.
I know one of these options will work for everyone, so give them a try!
Till next week,
